"While Carmen's origins were unquestionably subversive, MTV's new version, billed as a "Hip Hopera," blithely turns her story into that of a silly ho. To use hip hop to transmit this classic tale of seduction, love, betrayal and murder was marketing genius, no doubt. But given the lyrical powers of rap music, the piece also had the potential to reflect artistic genius as well. Sadly, this adaptation — which debuted this week and will be re-run throughout May, is fatally flawed".
